Avalon Beach Closes Again for Medical Waste

AVALON, N.J. (AP)  -- Avalon continues to have problems with medical debris washing up on the beach.

For the third time in four days, the Cape May County resort closed beaches Tuesday and public works crews swept the area from 14th to 22nd streets after needles, cotton swabs and other debris were found on the shore.

The problem began over the weekend, forcing some beaches to be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Officials said they'll decide Wednesday morning if the affected beaches can reopen.

The environmental enforcement arm of the state Attorney General's Office has been looking into the source of the waste.
