Hanover Native plants benefit New Jersey landscapes

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 12:00am

The Northern Chapter of The Native Plant Society of New Jersey invites gardeners, nature lovers and native plant enthusiasts to a meeting and free program on Tuesday, July 22 at 7 p.m. at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum's Haggerty Education Center at 53 Hanover Ave. in Whippany.

The program is entitled "The Marsh Meadow Garden."

Program speaker will be Mike Wilson of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum who will talk about the native plant detention basin at the arboretum.

Wilson is an expert horticulturist and will describe why the plants were chosen for the hydric, mesic and xeric levels of the basin.

The detention basin has become a thing of beauty, attracting many species of birds and butterflies, while at the same time protecting water quality from parking lot pollutants.

Why plant natives?

According to a Native Plant Society spokesperson, natives add beauty to the landscape and preserve the natural heritage.

They provide food and habitat for native wildlife; decrease the amount of water needed for landscape maintenance; protect water quality by controlling soil erosion and moderating floods and droughts; reduce the need for pesticides and fertilizers in the landscape and save the homeowner money because native plantings cost less to maintain than turf.

The Native Plant Society of New Jersey encourages appreciation of native flora and the preservation of native plants for future generations.

For more information, visit www.npsnj.org. For directions to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, visit www.arboretumfriends.org/directions.php or call (973) 326-7603.
