| ![]() DE Bay Town a Cautionary Tale for NJThis story in the Press of Atlantic City struck me as a harbinger of things to come for many NJ towns. In short, rising waters threaten a coastal town, the state's initial response was inadequate, people are pointing fingers...but the state is considering a buyout. People need to know that seawalls, often built to protect private property, usually destroy a public resource, a beach. Sea level is rising and every effort must be made to remove development in the rising waters' path. The State puts $25 million a year into the shore protection fund. Imagine if they used that money to buy property instead of spending it on sand that washes away, or seawalls that causes beaches to disappear.
