NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Officials were cleaning up a massive fuel spill in Newark Bay Monday night.

The Coast Guard said as much as 5,000 gallons of gasoline spilled into the water near the Bayonne Bridge.

Coast Guard officials said it was a barge to barge transfer that was taking place when the spill occurred around 6 p.m.

The closest area of land is the Richmond Terrace section of Staten Island.

The Fire Department and Coast Guard are responding to a gasoline spill in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island.

Just after 6 p.m., approximately 7,000 gallons of oil was being offloaded from the Wallabout Bay onto the Clearwater Barge No. 1, both of which are docked in a shipyard at 2901 Richmond Terrace, according to FDNY radio transmissions.

Part of the spill is floating toward the Bayonne Bridge, fire officials report.

FDNY Foam, HazMat and Marine 9 units, as well as the Coast Guard, are attempting to contain the scene.
