All New Jersey beaches reopen

OCEAN CITY, N.J. - August 30, 2008 (WPVI) -- Early morning searches found no medical waste on closed N.J. beaches  Since the preliminary sweeps of the beaches in Avalon and Ocean City on Saturday morning found no medical waste, officials reopened all the beaches. Ocean City Beach Closed after Syringes Found

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP)  -- There's been another beach closing in Cape May County due to medical waste.

But Ocean City officials say the two syringes found on city beaches Thursday aren't related to needles, cotton swabs and other debris that washed up in Avalon earlier this week.

As a precaution, Ocean City is keeping swimmers out of the water at one of its beaches. City business administrator Jim Rutala says the situation should be back to normal by Friday.  Read more »

Avalon Beach Closes Again for Medical Waste

AVALON, N.J. (AP)  -- Avalon continues to have problems with medical debris washing up on the beach.

For the third time in four days, the Cape May County resort closed beaches Tuesday and public works crews swept the area from 14th to 22nd streets after needles, cotton swabs and other debris were found on the shore.

The problem began over the weekend, forcing some beaches to be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Officials said they'll decide Wednesday morning if the affected beaches can reopen.  Read more »

Ocean City wants more sand to bolster south-end beaches

OCEAN CITY - The city is asking the state for more beach money just months after completion of a $7 million state project downtown.

The city hopes to partner again this fall with the state Department of Environmental Protection to repair storm-battered beaches on the south end between 34th Street and Corsons Inlet. So far, 21 towns have asked the state for $20 million.  Read more »
